Charles Stier > Teaching > Clarinet Reeds > In Conclusion

Learning to adjust reeds is an important step towards playing like a professional.

Gaining this skill is a time consuming and difficult task, but ultimately rewarding in terms of the sound you will be able to produce. Remember that reed adjustment is not a science--it cannot be reduced to simple rules, or even to consistent and convenient step-by-step procedures. Some time spent on reeds every day will help you gain the intuitive understanding that goes along with outward instruction in reed adjustment.

In closing we should emphasize that the ability to adjust reeds is difficult to learn in isolation--the aspiring professional needs to work with a master teacher who can constantly show how a good reed looks, feels, plays and sounds.

"Go to the pine if you want to learn about the pine,
or to the bamboo if you want to learn about the bamboo.
And in doing so, you must leave your subjective preoccupation with yourself.
Otherwise you impose yourself on the object and do not learn."
Matsuo Basho
