Charles Stier > Teaching > Clarinet Reeds > Introduction

This book is a unique combined effort. It puts together the ideas of a celebrated professional classical clarinet soloist--Charles Stier--with the prose of a writer and enthusiastic amateur, Charles Mansfield.

Charles Stier would like to dedicate this book to his clarinet teachers--whose patience, direction and artistry gave him insight, determination and inspiration: Alan Balter, Dr. Gordon C. Bobbett, Dr. Norman M. Heim, Dr. Robert Marcellus, George Pieterson and Dr. Randall S. Thompson. He is also deeply indebted to the talent and workmanship of three master craftsmen whose recent deaths have left an irreplaceable gap in the clarinet world: W. Hans Moennig of Philadelphia, PA; Herbert Wurlitzer of Neustadt an den Aisch, Germany and Frank Kaspar of Cicero, IL.

Clarinet Reeds is a guide for the clarinet player who sets his sights high--whether he be conservatory or university student, practicing professional or enthusiastic amateur. More than a how-to-do-it manual, the author (with writer Charles Mansfield) distills his insights as an internationally-acclaimed classical solo performer and recording artist into an illustrated step-by-step tour through the details of reed selection and adjustment. Above all, the book recognizes the importance of mental and emotional approaches to the art of clarinet playing, which are effective only when grounded on an intimate knowledge of the instrument itself.

"If a man has any greatness in him,
it comes to light, not in one flamboyant hour,
but in the ledger of his daily work."

Beryl Markham
