Summer Lessons

Lessons for school-aged students will be offered during the following weeks: June 28, July 5, 12, 19, 26; August 2, 9, 16

Adults may be scheduled separately.

Students continuing their regular music study throughout the summer will benefit the most, but it is wise to schedule even a few lessons during the summer; not only will skills stay sharper, it will help alleviate feelings of anxiety upon returning in the fall.

Lessons in Molly's studio are available Monday through Thursday. No lessons on Fridays.

Charles is available Monday through Friday.

The sign-up deadline is June 15th. Please call or email to reserve a day and time.

There will be a very special Summer Evening Musicale on August 20 for those students who attend five or more summer lessons.

Recital Venue and Fee

  • Your last newsletter mentioned the possibility of having a new venue for our formal March recitals and that this may require a recital fee (anywhere from $5 to $15 per student). The feedback received was positive and so I engaged The Lutheran Church of Saint Andrew, on the corner of New Hampshire and Norwood Road for our very special performance on March 21, 2010. It is a wonderful venue with a large, lovely space, two well-maintained grand pianos and a fine reception area.
  • This will require a $10.00 recital fee for all piano students eligible to participate and will appear on your first invoice of the school year.

Performance Classes

  • Our Performance Classes are open to all eligible piano students and other instrumentalists (if invited). Our first class will be held on October 10 from 10 to 11 am. Adult students meet afterward. Classes are held in our studio except for the final class of each semester, which will continue to be held at the Brooke Grove Retirement Village.

Summer Musicale

  • Our August 21 Summer Evening Musicale was a great event. We had a record number of performers and guests. The evening was made even more magical when the power went out and we continued our reception by candlelight. A perfect ending to our summer session.
  • Thank you all for your continued support and glowing recommendations! We’re looking forward to a rich and fun new school year!

News Flash!

  • I have had such an amazing demand for piano lessons that Charles has agreed, and happily so, to take on some piano students in addition to guitar, clarinet and composition students. He has coached many of my older students and specializes in working with students of middle-school age and older. Please continue to recommend us to your friends. We appreciate it so much!

Practice Logs

  • Practice logs should be kept up-to-date by all students until our very last lesson (May 30) of the year. There will be special prizes for the highest amount of practice in both the Junior and Senior categories.

Summer Lessons

  • We highly recommend that students continue music study through the summer, even if it means scheduling only two or three lessons. A regular practice routine is best--no routine can mean anxiety in the fall due to “forgetting” skills already learned.
  • The schedule will be set as we get close to summer.

Music Theory for Performers

Open Performance Class

  • Performance Classes provide an opportunity for students to prepare music for performance in front of their peers, readying them for more formal performance situations and building confidence and performance skills along the way. At these classes, some works are still “in progress,” but every performance opportunity brings learning, even if the piece has not been polished to perfection! We will give parents a glimpse into the special hour we spend together each month during the school year.
  • Remember, this is a class, not a recital. Due to the nature of the class, it is open to parents or guardians only! Please do not bring neighbors, friends, aunts, uncles, etc.
  • We will begin promptly at 10:30 am!

Studio Guideline Reminder
  • Please review the written Studio Guidelines found with the Studio Policy and discuss them with your child. Our goal is to learn in the most positive, respectful atmosphere possible.
  • IMPORTANT! For liability reasons and home studio zoning laws, remember that only the student(s) attending and one parent or guardian are allowed. No friends or siblings are permitted, unless they are my students. This includes Performance Classes! If you have questions about this or any other policy, please call

Is your child getting the most from music study?

  • Practicing music raises SAT scores. Students who study music out-perform their classmates who do not study a musical instrument.
  • Music lessons and instrumental practice improve long-term verbal memory.
  • Studying music enlarges a region of the brain called the left planum temporale, which is involved in remembering words.
  • Beyond scientific measures, learning to play well and to express oneself creates immeasurable, unquantifiable satisfaction.

Are you aware that achieving any true benefits requires diligent and regular practice (6 days a week, at least the length of the lesson time)?

Music Instruction Aids Verbal Memory

  • According to a new study, children with music training had significantly better verbal memory than their counterparts without such training.
  • The longer the training the better!
